Hello my lovelies, today I’m talking to the amazing commissioning editor of the well-know blogger magazine, Blogosphere. Sarah talks about what it’s like to work at the biggest blogger magazine and how Beyoncé is one of her biggest influences.
What were you doing before blogging and how did you get in to it?
I first discovered the world of blogging when I was around 16, so before then I was really just focused on studying and watching YouTube videos after school. I used to post outfit photos on LookBook.nu, then realised lots of my favourite people on the platform were linking to their own websites. I then researched how to set up my own blog and quite quickly got to work creating my own!
What’s the best thing you’ve done so far within your blog?
Probably getting the job I have now! I definitely would not be working at Blogosphere without my blog, and I can’t imagine working anywhere else now. Apart from my job, I think my blog has also helped me to make some amazing friends, there’s people I talk to everyday now that I originally met at blogger events.
What’s it like working at Blogosphere?
I’ve worked at Blogosphere for two years now and I’m currently the Commissioning Editor. I spend most of my time working on features and interviews for each issue of the magazine, which is always really interesting! We host a couple of events each year – the Blogosphere Awards and Christmas Festival – and my job also means I get to help organise them.
That sounds amazing!
Who is your biggest influence?
Ooh that’s a tough one! When it comes to blogger influencers, it has to be Victoria McGrath (InTheFrow). She works incredibly hard, and I’m consistently blown away by the content she creates. I also take a lot of inspiration from Beyoncé, again she’s someone who works non-stop and watching her performances reminds me to keep striving to be the best that I can be and give everything I work on 100%.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Don’t let the bastards get you down. I think my dad told me this when I was around 16 and its stuck with me ever since.
What do you do in your spare time?
Sleep. No, seriously, I nap a lot. I find it hard to relax and switch my brain off, even when I’m watching TV I have to be doing something, and I get distracted by work and my blog really easily. So over the weekends I try to nap during the days to really give myself a rest, otherwise I’ll just work and work and work!
It’s good to have a rest, our bodies need it!
What is your favourite and least favourite part about blogging?
I love the creativity that comes with it. Nothing excites me more than taking a set of photos I’m really proud of. I really enjoy the visual side of my blog posts, and when I have a great set of photos I can’t wait to share them and it makes me feel really proud of my blog.
My least favourite part is the stats and analytics. It’s easy to get caught up in numbers, and feel down when they’re stagnant or declining, so I try not to focus on them too much.
Favourite beauty brands at the moment?
Liz Earle’s skincare products are my all-time favourites. I can’t live without a tube of Cleanse and Polish in my bathroom! In terms of makeup, I’m really loving Revolution Pro at the moment and Sleek are also great, especially their highlighters which I use basically every day!
What is a typical day in your life?
I tend to wake up around 8am, then I’ll wash my face and brush my teeth, before applying some moisturiser and lip balm. Then I’ll make breakfast and scroll through Twitter while eating it. I leave my place at 9.45am and walk to the Blogosphere office. I often go home for lunch at 1.30pm, and I’ll make a quick pasta dish which I eat while watching something on Netflix. I then return to the office and will stay there until 6pm. In the evenings, I’ll run along Southbank, then return home and shower before making dinner and heading to bed at 9pm. I then read until 10/11pm then go to sleep.
What one product couldn’t you live without?
My phone! It has so many photos on it I couldn’t bare to lose, and all of my music too! It’s also the main way I stay in touch with everyone in my life, I can’t imagine not being able to message my mum and dad or boyfriend every day.
Three words to describe you
Ambitious, Resilient, Decisive.
How would you describe your personal style?
Always changing! I love following trends and trying out new pieces. I’m currently loving off-the-shoulder tops and dresses, gingham prints and red.
Drugstore or high-end gal?
Drugstore all the way! I love a good bargain.
Best advice to bloggers.
Create the content you love, not the content you think others will love. Oh, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it’s the best way to learn!
Thanks for reading my lovelies, tune in tomorrow for my interview with Tori Lavan.
