Behind the Screen of Megan Atkinson

Behind the Screen of Megan Atkinson

Hello my lovelies, we’ve come so far with this series and I’m so glad you’ve all stuck alongside with me. Today is the 26th episode of Behind the Screens and I’m talking to Megan, a nineteen year old blogger from a small town called Middlesbrough in North East England. Megan completed her A Levels last year but the entrepreneurial side of her couldn’t justify the £50K debt university brings, so she is now pursuing a career in business. She also started her own digital illustration Etsy shop in May and hopes to one day go full time with it, but until then she’s stuck in the world of retail with some blogging on the side. Megan talks about how her office is a Harry Potter cupboard under the stairs and how the GirlBoss herself is her influence.

What were you doing before blogging and how did you get in to it?

If I’m honest, before blogging I was floating through life unsure of what I wanted to do or what I had a passion for. I did A Levels because I was going with the motions- in hindsight I would have got a full time apprenticeship in retail and worked on making my blog profitable so I had the funds to start a business earlier than now, but you live and you learn and I’m glad I’ve started my blog and business now- better late than never!

What’s your business?

My business is ‘Word Of Pen’ on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/WordOfPen?ref=shop_sugg), I sell digitally illustrated/typography prints, its very new and not really established yet, but I’m hoping to put a lot of time into it over the next few months to get it going.

Who is your biggest influence?

My biggest influence has to be the Girlboss herself, Sophia Amoruso. I’ve read ‘Girlboss’ watched the TV adaptation, completed the workbook and pinned every one of her quotes you could possibly imagine. I love her passion, drive and most of all unapologetic attitude towards her goals and in my low moments I always catch the voice in my head whispering to me ‘What would Sophia do?’. I’ve definitely noticed her headstrong, determined attitude infiltrate its way into my blog, and I hope one day it does the same in my business career.

What do you do in your spare time?

My spare time for the past year has been dedicated to learning the ropes of blogging; I’ve focused on establishing my website, finding my writing style and niche, building on my photography skills and learning the ins and outs of analytics and SEO. Now I’ve had my blog for a whole year I’ve found my rhythm, so I’ve started another side project- my Etsy store ‘Word Of Pen’. I’m excited for the challenge of building a brand from scratch and learning more about product photography and social media marketing which will both help me with my blog too!

What is a typical day in your life?

A typical day in my life starts at 7.30- I jump out of bed and put my workout clothes on before driving to my local park for a run to let out all my negative energy, clear my head and set my goals for the day. I’ll then come back and shower, put my PJS back on and have a cup of tea and breakfast with an episode of whatever I’m watching, before heading to my ‘home office’ (a cupboard under the stairs) to get to work on my to do list for the day. This usually includes writing blog posts, scheduling tweets, planning my Instagram feed and working on some new designs for my Etsy store. I usually stop at around 4pm so I can have a cup of tea and catch up with my Mam when she comes home from work, and the rest of the evening will be spent finishing anything I didn’t get done, or (most likely) binge watching Netflix on one tab and making Pinterest boards on another.

This cupboard under the stairs, is it like Harry Potters room?

My cupboard is like Harry Potter’s room but a little more blogger-y. Its basically just a desk and a chair with a bit of decoration.

Three words to describe you

If I was to describe myself in three words they’d be ‘driven’, ‘entrepreneurial’ and ‘creative’!

Best advice to bloggers.

My best advice for other bloggers is don’t worry about finding your niche-it isn’t the be all and end all! Give yourself time to experiment with different writing styles, different topics and different kinds of images and sooner or later your blog will take shape!
